Innovate Project - Funding & Partners

  • In 2022 Smart Grid Controls were awarded a grant by Innovate UK to carry out a feasibility study to develop innovative, low-cost solutions for the electrification of off grid rural communities.

  • Our research partners for this project were Kings College London & the University of Pretoria. Our local implementation partner was Johannesburg based RC Sol.

  • We partnered with eThekwini Metro and a number of rural communities in eThekwini to develop the delivery model.

  • The project developed 2 key innovations - a low-cost energy router, to provide DC to AC power to homes and an AI supported management system to optimise mobile energy storage.
